The Connecticut Department of Agriculture (CT DoAg) is delighted to announce that Santa Claus and his reindeer have officially been cleared to fly over the Nutmeg State on December 24.
Following thorough physical exams conducted by veterinarians with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), all nine reindeer – including the one with the famous glowing nose – are healthy, fit, and ready for the magical journey. The exams confirmed that the team is free of contagious diseases, such as brucellosis and tuberculosis, come from a CWD-free herd, and are in top condition for high-altitude sleigh travel.
“Santa’s reindeer are an important part of holiday traditions for many families, and we take their health and safety seriously,” said Agriculture Commissioner Bryan P. Hurlburt. “I appreciate the efforts of our State Veterinarian and Animal Health team, along with the vast support network including AVMA veterinarians and other state animal health officials, to ensure that Santa’s team is ready for a safe and successful flight.”
Weather is predicted to be favorable for Christmas Eve with light wind and partly cloudy skies. Should any trouble arise, Santa’s Emergency Landing and Veterinary Expert System (ELVES), a network of veterinarians, will be standing by throughout the journey. The ELVES will be ready to provide any assistance needed, from emergency sleigh repairs to refueling the team, ensuring smooth operations from takeoff to touchdown.
State Veterinarian Dr. Thamus J. Morgan, DVM, MPH, DACVPM added, “Each reindeer received a full physical exam, including checks for fitness, stamina, and overall health. Their paperwork is in order, including Certificate of Veterinary Inspection, clearing them for interstate travel. Santa can fly with confidence knowing his team is in excellent shape and in compliance with state regulations.”
A Special Message for Connecticut’s Children
Santa and his reindeer work hard to deliver holiday cheer, so before you head to bed on Christmas Eve, remember to leave out some CT Grown treats to help fuel their travel.
“We have it on good authority that Santa enjoys cookies with milk from Connecticut dairy farms,” added Commissioner Hurlburt. “And the reindeer team enjoys crunchy carrots and fresh apples from Connecticut’s fruit and vegetable producers.”
Families can track Santa’s progress with NORAD Tracks Santa to follow along and see when they have entered Connecticut’s airspace. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all from CT DoAg!
