Learn to Fish with the DEEP CARE Program This Spring/Summer!
Free Introduction to Fishing Online Classes, In-Person “Fishing Field Trips” Offered at Waterbodies Around the State Through Spring and Summer
Interested in learning how to fish? The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP)’s Fisheries Division, through its Connecticut Aquatic Resources Education (CARE) program, is here to help you get into fishing by offering free Introduction to Fishing ZOOM classes and special “fishing field trips” offered through the summer at waterbodies around the state!
The CARE program has been teaching beginners about the wonders of fish and fishing since 1986! CARE is a science-based package of environmental, ecological, and fishing information, offering a variety of “Learn to Fish” classes and events that are designed to increase fishing participation by showing how fun and easy fishing can be while also fostering an appreciation for the environment and our state’s natural resources.
State certified CARE Instructors pass along information and expertise they’ve gained while fishing in local waters for many years. Demonstrations and activities make learning fun for adults and kids alike. Learn the basics of fishing in an instructor-led ZOOM class and then attend a fishing trip to a local hotspot! CARE activities are held year-round, including ice fishing trips in the winter!
For those new to fishing, the first step is to register for an Introduction to Fishing ZOOM class to learn all the basics of fishing in an interactive virtual format. Classes are offered weekly and can be attended from the comfort of your couch!
The next step is to identify a fishing trip you’d like to attend! In the spring/summer, the free fishing field trip events are offered three times a week at locations around the state from mid-April through the summer. CARE fishing Instructors will be on hand at these events with loaner equipment, bait, and instruction to help you have a positive and successful fishing experience! Pre-registration is strongly encouraged, and space is limited to the first 35 people. Go here to view the full schedule of trips, and to register.
Participants in these events are asked to stay in family groups and spread out. All participants must have a mask and wear it if within 6 feet of anyone outside of their family group. DEEP has hand sanitizer and sanitizing spray available at its registration table. We are keeping the size of the events small (35 people) to maintain proper social distancing protocols. Additionally, anyone experiencing symptoms including fever, chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell should stay home.
