(Rocky Hill, CT) - An Ansonia man was arrested today and charged with Workers’ Compensation fraud after an investigation found that he was working while collecting benefits for an injury that supposedly rendered him unable to work at his regular job.
Joshua Good, 36, of 10 Byron Avenue, Ansonia, was arrested by Inspectors from the Workers’ Compensation Fraud Control Unit in the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney on a warrant charging him with one count of Fraudulent Claim or Receipt of Benefits, one count of Larceny in The First Degree by Defrauding a Public Community and one count of Perjury.
According to the arrest warrant affidavit, in September of 2019, a complaint was filed on behalf of the Liberty Mutual Insurance Agency by an agent from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, an organization used by insurance companies to report suspected fraud. The complaint arose from a November 2017 claim for Workers’ Compensation benefits by Good reporting that he sustained a small cut on his finger and an injury to his shoulder while using a table saw while working at a Derby building and design company. He was examined by a physician and was placed on Temporary Total Disability (TTD) meaning he was considered to have zero work capacity and could not earn any outside wages without reporting it. In a period from November 15, 2017 to January 24, 2020, Good received $30,982.13 in TTD benefits.
While receiving TTD benefits during that time frame, Good failed to disclose a job he had with G-Zen, LLC which ran a restaurant that paid him $1255.90 for 106 hours of work. When asked about outside employment under oath in a deposition taken by Liberty Mutual, Good claimed he never worked at all while receiving TTD benefits.
Good was released on a $30,000.000 non-surety bond. His next court date in Derby Superior Court, G.A. No. 5, is December 4, 2020. The charges against him are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case will be prosecuted by the Workers’ Compensation Fraud Control Unit of the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney in Rocky Hill.
