An environmental emergency is a situation that poses an immediate threat to public health or the environment resulting from the release or potential release of oil, hazardous chemicals or radioactive materials into the air, land or water.

The DEEP continues to use a broad range of regulatory, permitting, assistance and enforcement tools to maximize protection of public health and the environment, maintain a strong, credible enforcement presence and to minimize potential impacts that regulated activities can have on the environment.
