Mpox Vaccination

Mpox Vaccine FAQ

SHOULD I GET VACCINATED?

The current mpox outbreak has affected some populations more than others. While anyone can contract mpox, the JYNNEOS vaccine is currently recommended for people who meet at least one of the following:

  • Gay, bisexual, or other men who has sex with men or transgender, nonbinary, or gender-diverse persons who in the past 6 months have had any of the following:
    • A new diagnosis of one or more sexually transmitted diseases (e.g., chlamydia, gonorrhea, or syphilis)
    • More than one sex partner
  • People who in the past 6 months have had one (or more) of the following:
    • Sex at a commercial sex venue
    • Sex in association with a large commercial event
  • People whose partners meet any of the criteria above
  • People who anticipate experiencing any of the criteria above
  • People who know or suspect that they have been exposed to mpox in the last 14 days

Vaccination is highly recommended for people who are at risk for mpox and are living with HIV or have a condition that weakens the immune system.

Getting vaccinated after a recent exposure may reduce the chance of you getting mpox, and it can reduce symptoms if you do get it. Vaccination is not recommended for people with current mpox symptoms or people who have already had mpox. If you have already had mpox, then you likely have protection against another infection.

People need to get both doses of the vaccine for the best protection against mpox.
