FAQs
What does a Moderator do?
Elections simply cannot run without Moderators, or chief election officials. The Moderator at each voting location ensures election laws are followed, supports poll workers at their site, and makes the voting process as smooth as possible for every eligible voter. Your role is vital in making our elections work!
What is the timeline for the program?
Below is the general timeline for the 2025 cohort. Dates are subject to change.
March 28, 2025: Deadline for applications.
April 25, 2025: Final decisions sent
Late August 2025: Virtual orientation
August & September 2025: Moderator, early voting, and CVRS training
October 20 – November 2, 2025: Early Voting period
November 4, 2025: Election Day
January 2026: Post-election convening (in person)
What kind of training will I receive?
As a Next Gen participant, you will receive Moderator-level training, early voting training, and CVRS (Centralized Voter Registration System) training. The Moderator of a polling place undergoes the highest level of training and is responsible for ensuring that all election laws and procedures are followed.
With Early Voting being a new initiative as of 2024, it is crucial for poll workers to be well-versed in Early Voting policies to help ensure a smooth process for all voters.
All Next Gen participants will also be paired with an experienced Registrar of Voters who will serve as their mentor. Mentors will be available during the training process and the general election period to answer questions and offer support.
Will I get paid?
Yes! Next Gen participants will be compensated ($18/hour) for their training hours as well as the hours they work at their assigned voting locations.
Where will I be working?
We will assess which towns have the highest need for Next Gen leaders and assign your early voting location or polling place accordingly. Your transportation costs to and from your assigned location(s) will be reimbursed.
Are there any expenses that will not be covered or reimbursed?
The only costs you may incur that will not be covered are for meals you bring or purchase during training or while working at your assigned early voting location or polling place.
This program is presented by the Office of the Secretary of the State and supported by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s Help America Vote College Program.
