Renewing your Connecticut Provisional Educator Teaching Certificate

If you hold a valid provisional certificate but haven't met the requirements to advance to the professional level, you may apply for renewal at the initial level.

Effective July 1, 2025, the Provisional Certificate will be discontinued and Connecticut certificates will be issued as a two-tier continuum: Initial and Professional. To be eligible for a Professional Certificate after July 1, 2025, educators must:

  • Document at least 50 school months of successful experience in Connecticut (under an Initial and/or Provisional Educator Certification),
  • Have met or been waived from the TEAM program requirements as applicable, and
  • Hold a master’s degree or have completed advanced coursework.

Candidates who are not eligible to advance to the Professional level, may instead be eligible to renew at the Initial level.

Note: All Provisional Certificates with expiration dates on or after July 1, 2025, will remain valid through the existing expiration date. However, the CSDE will no longer issue or renew certificates at the provisional level.
