Administrator certification requirements
Educators who want to serve in an administrative position must hold the appropriate certificate: Intermediate Administration and Supervision (092) or Superintendent of Schools (093). Here are the requirements for both:
Intermediate Administration and Supervision
Initial certificate: Candidates who want to serve as a program director, assistant principal, academic dean, curriculum director, principal, or assistant superintendent must meet the following requirements:
- A minimum of 50 months of appropriate teaching experience
- A master’s degree awarded by an accredited college or university
- 18 graduate-level credits beyond your master’s degree
- Coursework that includes at least 15 graduate-level credits in educational administration covering cover each of these areas and resulting in the institution recommending you for certification:
- Psychological and pedagogical foundations of learning
- Program monitoring and curriculum development
- School administration
- Personnel supervision and evaluation
- Contemporary educational problems and solutions from a policy-making perspective
- Three credits in special education, including gifted and talented
- Earn a formal institutional recommendation for certification
- Pass the Connecticut Administrator Test, which is available through ETS. We encourage you to prepare for the exam with ETS’ test preparation materials and practice test.
To advance to a Professional certificate, you must serve for a minimum of 50 months in a full-time administrative position in Connecticut and meet advanced coursework requirements.
Superintendent of Schools
Initial certificate: Candidates who want to serve as a superintendent must complete the following to apply:
- 80 or more months of successful teaching or administrative service, including a minimum of 30 months of work as a full-time administrator
- A master’s degree from an accredited college or university
- At least 30 additional graduate-level credits beyond your master’s degree covering cover each of these areas and resulting in the institution recommending you for certification:
- Psychological and pedagogical foundations of learning
- Program monitoring and curriculum development
- School administration
- Personnel supervision and evaluation
- Contemporary educational problems and solutions from a policy-making perspective
- Earn a formal institutional recommendation for certification
- Three credits in special education, including gifted and talented
