Red, White and Blue Schools Program Recognizes 17 Connecticut Schools
Secretary of the State Denise Merrill and Education Commissioner Dianna R. Wentzell today recognized 17 schools, including three school districts, for their implementation of the Red, White and Blue Schools program. This initiative stresses the importance of teaching civics throughout students’ educations in varied and innovative ways in order to encourage whole-life community engagement. This school year is the program’s second year with the 2017-18 theme centered on “Engagement at the Local Level”. The Red, White and Blue Schools’ theme for the 2018-2019 school year - “Exploring Our Local Historical Roots” – was also announced.

Gov. Malloy: Education Week Ranks Connecticut Fourth In Nation On Annual Report Card
Governor Dannel P. Malloy and State Education Commissioner Dianna R. Wentzell today announced that Connecticut has been ranked fourth among the 50 states and the District of Columbia on Education Week’s annual edition of its Quality Counts 2018: School Finance Report & Rankings. Connecticut received an overall score of 87.8 out of 100 points and a grade of B+ while the nation as a whole received a grade of C.

CT State Department of Education to Hold Meeting Tomorrow for Path Academy Families Ahead of Consideration of Charter Revocation Process
Connecticut State Department of Education (SDE) Commissioner Dianna Wentzell and other SDE officials will hold a meeting tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday, May 22) for the students, parents and guardians of Path Academy to provide additional information and answer questions on the potential revocation of the charter school’s operators’ license.

Governor Malloy Signs Law Requiring Holocaust and Genocide Education in Connecticut Schools
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he has signed into law legislation that adds Holocaust and genocide education and awareness to the required courses of study for public schools in Connecticut. While the State Department of Education has made an optional course on these topics available to districts for years, not all schools have chosen to use it.

Governor Malloy Launches Annual Summer Reading Challenge at State Library
Governor Dannel P. Malloy, State Department of Education Commissioner Dianna R. Wentzell, the State Library’s Director of Library Development Dawn LaValle, and school representatives from across the state today launched the 2018 Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge at the Connecticut State Library. Governor Malloy also announced the 2018 summer reading challenge theme “Libraries Rock!” and recognized the top-performing schools from the 2017 Summer Reading Challenge.

Gov. Malloy: State's Results on National Assessment Shows Reduction in Some Achievement Gaps Since 2011
Governor Dannel P. Malloy and State Department of Education Commissioner Dianna R. Wentzell today announced that the State of Connecticut has been making progress in its efforts to reduce achievement gaps, according to the 2017 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) – a report known as the “Nation’s Report Card” created by the National Center for Education Statistics.

Gov. Malloy Announces Increase in Graduation Rates for Seventh Consecutive Year
Governor Dannel P. Malloy and State Department of Education (SDE) Commissioner Dianna R. Wentzell today announced that graduation rates in the state reached a record high of 87.9 percent in 2017, marking an increase for the seventh consecutive year.

The Connecticut State Department of Education’s (CSDE) Regional School Choice Office (RSCO) would like to remind parents, grandparents and guardians of children entering prekindergarten through Grade 12 that February 28, next week, is the final day to submit an on-time application for the 2018-19 RSCO lottery.
