Path Academy Voluntarily Surrenders Charter Before Conclusion of State Board of Education Revocation Process
(HARTFORD) – The State Board of Education (SBE) and state Department of Education (CSDE) today received confirmation from Path Academy that it intends to voluntarily surrender its charter to operate a charter school in Connecticut. This follows a vote in May by the SBE to initiate the charter revocation process against Path Academy because of several significant areas of concern regarding the operation of the school, including evidence indicating discrepancies in student records and enrollment, operating unauthorized satellite schools, and the implementation of unauthorized school policies. Prior to Path Academy’s surrender of its charter, the SBE was approaching a statutory deadline to vote to approve revocation or allow Path to continue operating under conditions set forth by CSDE.
“Now that Path Academy has surrendered its charter and will cease operations for the upcoming school year, our highest priority is, as it has always been, ensuring the well-being of the students formerly served by Path and providing them with the best possible options for an uninterrupted transition to continuing their education,” said Education Commissioner Dianna Wentzell. “We are committed to doing everything necessary to place these students in learning environments that meet their unique academic needs and position them to grow, thrive and succeed.”
At the beginning of the revocation process, Commissioner Wentzell stated CSDE’s commitment to providing placement supports personalized to each Path Academy student and engaging specialists to help students identify the best options for completing high school in the event that Path’s charter was revoked or surrendered. In addition to the previously mentioned placement efforts, CSDE is exploring an alternative approach involving the Windham school district and Path’s charter management organization Our Piece of the Pie. The results of CSDE’s ongoing efforts on this matter will be determined by its assessment of what will best serve the interests of the students.
