How is natural gas transported throughout CT?

meters on houseNatural gas is delivered by the interstate transmission pipelines to the Local Distribution Companies (LDCs) at over 60 city gate stations throughout the State. The LDCs in Connecticut are Connecticut Natural Gas (subsidiary of Avangrid) located in the greater Hartford area and in Greenwich; Southern Connecticut Gas Company (subsidiary of Avangrid) in the greater Bridgeport and New Haven areas; Yankee Gas d/b/a Eversource Energy serving the Stamford/Norwalk, Danbury, Waterbury, Meriden/Middletown, Enfield/Danielson, Torrington/Winsted and New London areas. The City of Norwich and Town of Preston are served by the Norwich Department of Public Utilities.

LDC mains generally run down public streets and are typically 2” through 20” in diameter. Lines from the streets to homes and businesses are usually between ½” and 4”. While most distribution lines operate at ¼ pounds per square inch gauge (psig) (low pressure) through 100 psig, there are some special very high pressure distribution lines that operate at pressures as high as 750 psig. There are approximately 8,200 miles of distribution mains and approximately 450,000 services in Connecticut.
