Energy Benchmarking

Energy benchmarking is a process to create an energy consumption profile for buildings.  In 2005 OPM implemented an energy benchmarking program for state facilities under a memorandum of agreement with the Institute for Sustainable Energy.  Since 2005 the Institute has benchmarked over 110 buildings.  This includes all of the buildings under the custody and control of the Department of Public Safety, the Judicial Branch, the Vocational-Technical High Schools, and many dormitory’s and laboratory facilities at the state universities.  The Institute is currently working on benchmarking all buildings under the custody and control of the Department of Corrections.

This energy profile is used to compare structures with similar buildings (construction type and use) to determine how well a building is performing and target resources to those buildings that are under performing.  At present, the data being generated under this program has been used by agency building operators to improve energy performance.  As more buildings are benchmarked, the information will be used to drive energy improvement policies across state agencies.
