Federal Government Agencies:
  • The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) protects consumers by insuring deposits up to $250,000. The FDIC, in cooperation with other federal and state regulatory agencies, promotes sound banking practices by identifying, monitoring and addressing risks to the deposit insurance fund. It also enforces compliance with consumer protection and civil rights laws.
    • The FDIC's Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator allows consumers and financial institutions to quickly check whether a depositor with multiple accounts at the same institution has exceeded the $250,000 limit for deposit insurance coverage.
  • The Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) is a formal interagency body empowered to prescribe uniform principles, standards and report forms for the examination and supervision of financial institutions by federal regulators, including the Federal Reserve System (FRB), the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS). Among the information on its web site, FFIEC posts Uniform Bank Performance Reports for federally supervised or insured banks. These analytical reports permit evaluation of a bank's current condition, trends in its financial performance and comparisons with its peers.
  • Federal Financial Housing Agency
  • The Federal Reserve System, or the "Fed" as it is commonly called, serves as the central bank of the United States. It formulates and executes monetary policy, supervises and regulates depository institutions, assists in the federal government's financing operations and serves as the banker for the United States government.  The Federal Reserve System consists of a network of twelve District Banks. At the hub of the network is a Board of Governors, headquartered in Washington, D.C. The Board of Governors is generally responsible for coordinating actions of the District Banks.   • The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) is a network to bring people and information together to fight money laundering.
  • The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) supervises banks, credit unions, and other financial companies, and will enforce Federal consumer financial laws.
  • The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) is a Federal government agency responsible for chartering, supervising, examining and insuring federal credit unions. NCUA also insures state credit unions which apply and qualify for insurance.  The NCUA Customer Assistance Center, mycreditunion.gov, assists customers in resolving disputes with credit unions.

  • The Small Business Administration (SBA) was established to aid, counsel and protect the interests of small business concerns.   • The United States Secret Service, beyond protecting the President and other officials, enforces federal laws relating to counterfeiting and forgery, coins, currency, stamps, Government bonds, other obligations or securities of the United States, checks, credit/debt card fraud, computer fraud and false identification crimes.
