DEEP Alerts Residents and Visitors of Elevated Wildfire Risk this Weekend
(HARTFORD, CT) – The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) today reminds residents and visitors that forest fire danger levels are elevated from “High” to “Extreme” throughout Connecticut and are expected to remain elevated throughout the upcoming weekend due to ongoing drought conditions. The danger will remain “High” or above until there is significant rain.
DEEP Encourages Continued Bear Awareness During Fall: Bears Increase Food Intake and Are More Active
(HARTFORD, CT) — The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is reminding residents to follow best practices to reduce the likelihood of an encounter with a bear this fall, as bears’ quest for more food before the winter makes them very active for the next few months. During the fall season, black bears increase their food intake to add fat reserves needed to help them survive winter.

DEEP Reminds Boaters that Paddlers are Required to Wear Life Jackets Starting October 1
(HARTFORD) – The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) reminds boaters that state law requires anyone operating a canoe, kayak, stand-up paddleboard or other manually-propelled vessel between October 1 and May 31 must wear a personal floatation device (PFD).
Bishop Swamp Wildlife Management Area Adds Acreage
(HARTFORD, CT) – The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is pleased to announce that 284 acres in Hebron, formerly the Fracchia property, have been added to the 752-acre Bishop Swamp Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Andover and will be open for specific regulated hunting seasons starting this fall. Bishop Swamp WMA now consists of two sections: the original section in Andover and the new property acquisition nearby in Hebron. Abutting state lands include Gay City State Park (closed to hunting) and a section of Meshomasic State Forest that is open to hunting.
