Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act (CUTPA)

The Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act (CUTPA) prohibits unfair and deceptive acts in the marketplace. Under CUTPA, if a person suffers a measurable loss of money or property due to an unfair or deceptive act may file a claim to recover that loss.

Starting October 1, 2026, the maximum amount of restitution increased to $25,000. Previously, the cap was set at $10,000.

The Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) oversees the CUTPA program and has issued regulations that define types of unfair trade practices. For example, any violation of the Home Improvement Act is deemed to violate CUTPA.

Note: Unfair or deceptive acts do not need to be explicitly prohibited in CUTPA for an individual or DCP to bring action against a company.
