How do I get a birth certificate for an adopted child?
Once a child's adoption is finalized you can request their new birth certificate through:
- CT Department of Vital Records
- The town hall of the town where your child was born
Please keep these in mind:
- Get the name of the town and/or state your adoptive child was born in prior to adoption.
- Your child's new birth certificate will be available about four months after the adoption is finalized.
You can get an uncertified copy of your child’s original birth certificate if:
- They were born and adopted in Connecticut
- Their adoption was finalized after October 2, 1983
- They are over the age of 18 on or after July 1, 2015
If your child was born out of state:
