Who can adopt a child in Connecticut?

You can adopt a child if you:

  • Are at least 21 years old
  • Pass criminal background checks
  • Pass a home evaluation
  • Have enough income to provide for yourself and the child
  • Have at least a two-bedroom home
  • Attend a 10-week training program

Here are a few more things you should know:

  • There is no discrimination based on race, gender identity or expression, marital status, or actual or perceived inherent sexuality. You can be single or married. You can be a same-gender couple.
  • You can already have one or more children in your home.
  • You can work outside the home if your plan is approved by the child’s social worker. Their evaluation is guided by the age and needs of each child.
