Household Products Containing Mercury
Mercury has been used in many household, medical and industrial products. Although mercury performs many useful functions in our workplaces and homes, it is toxic and can impair our health.
"Toward the Virtual Elimination of Mercury from the Solid Waste Stream" was submitted to the Governor and State legislature in response to Public Act 99-228. The report provides recommendations for reducing mercury in solid waste including eliminating mercury from school science labs, requiring manufacturers to provide for the collection and recycling of their mercury containing products, and using household hazardous waste programs to collect elemental mercury from homes.
Mercury is a heavy metal that can accumulate in living tissue. Exposure to mercury, when released into the environment through spills or incineration, can be toxic to humans and wildlife, or cause other health effects such as neurological and reproductive disorders. Therefore, proper management of used mercury-containing items and elemental mercury is important to protect human health and the environment.
