Health Care Worker Vaccinations

Many Health Care Workers (HCWs)(e.g., physicians, nurses, emergency medical personnel, dental professionals and students, medical and nursing students, laboratory technicians, hospital volunteers, and administrative staff) are at risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. The work setting is the place they are exposed and where they expose others.  Vaccination of Health Care Workers, in the work setting, presents a unique opportunity to prevent their illness and prevent them from transmitting diseases.  

Understanding the principles of Health Care Worker vaccinations and implementing programs may, at times, be worlds apart.  Healthcare worker rates for influenza vaccinations are about 30%-40%.
