Description: The Municipal Finance Advisory Commission (MFAC) is a statutory, eight-member body appointed by the Governor composed of four members who are municipal fiscal or executive officers, three non-public employees, and one representative from the State Office of Policy and Management (OPM). The MFAC is responsible for reviewing proposed regulations regarding the standards for municipal audit reports and working with any municipality, referred to it by OPM, to improve the fiscal condition of that municipality.

The Commission frequently holds meetings with municipalities who exhibits unsound or irregular financial practices including delinquent audits and/or internal control weaknesses that may lead to financial challenges.  The Commission provides financial advice and recommendations to municipalities based upon its collective professional expertise and experience.

The MFAC utilizes formal guidelines that outline its statutory authority, membership structure, reporting expectations, financial oversight procedures, and the tier designation process that guides its work with municipalities. View the full guidelines here.
