What is a tuition refund?

The meaning of a tuition refund can vary based on a school’s policy. A tuition refund gives back the money you paid in the event you withdraw from classes or fail to complete any credit hours. A refund can be full and include fees paid, or partial.

What is a tuition refund and cancellation policy?

Schools need to have policies about refunds and cancellations for each program.

How do I know my school's refund policy?

The enrollment agreement often has refund policies in it. But this may differ from one school to the next.

Here are some terms that your school’s tuition refund and cancellation policy might use:

Drop/add period

Some schools have a drop/add period. Students can withdraw without penalty and get a full refund if they meet the school’s deadline.

Prorated refunds

The school may issue a partial refund if a student withdraws after the drop/add period. They may prorate the refund based on the length of time a student has been enrolled.

Eligibility for a refund

Students dismissed for academic reasons, on a leave of absence, or withdrawn may get a refund.

Exclusions from refunds

Some fees, like housing, health insurance, and program fees, may not be refundable.

Refund process

This refers to how and when a school processes refunds.

Make sure you read and understand a school’s policies before you enroll. If you find the policy confusing, wait before you sign your enrollment agreement. You can always ask the school to explain. Or, reach out to us for more help.
