What is a private occupational school?
It is also called a career, trade, or vocational school. A person, board, association, partnership, corporation, LLC, or other entity may operate one.
This type of school does not grant degrees or college credits. Instead, for pay, it aims to prepare you to pursue a specific job once you graduate. For example, a nursing assistant or car mechanic.
What should I know about private occupational school “recruiters”?
A school may hire recruiters to enroll students. Then, the school must provide each recruiter's contact details to CT's Office of Higher Education (OHE).
The recruiter cannot make a student pay a placement or referral fee. This person is also not a school counselor. Their job is to boost enrollment.
Will my credits from a private occupational school transfer to other schools?
The receiving school decides whether to accept credits from another school. Contact the institution you want to attend and ask about its transfer credit policy.
What should I do if my career school closes?
Students should contact CT OHE if a school closes. Once we have an update, our website will advise of any special instructions related to the specific school closure.
What is the role of CT’s Office of Higher Education?
CT’s OHE provides consumer protection for current and potential students. We work with career schools to ensure they comply with state statutes and rules.
