Consumer Counsel Coleman Issues Consumer Alert Highlighting Changes in Standard Service Rates Effective July 1, 2025

7/01/2025

NEW BRITAIN, CT – Today, Consumer Counsel Coleman issued a consumer alert highlighting the changes to Standard Service rates affecting both Eversource and United Illuminating consumers. Eversource customers will pay 9.748 ¢ per kWh and United Illuminating customers will pay 11.68 ¢ per kWh effective July 1, 2025. However, customers may not see a decrease in their monthly bills. Energy consumption increases roughly 35% during summer months due to increased cooling system and air conditioning use on heat high days.

“Standard service electricity rates will decrease on July 1 for both Eversource and UI customers, which is good news. The cautionary reminder is that customers may not necessarily see lower monthly bills because of increased energy consumption in the summer months due to increased air conditioning use, especially during heat waves like the one we just experienced last week. My office urges consumers to take all feasible action to reduce monthly bills through conservation and efficiency measures, and we encourage consumers to look at options to improve energy efficiency in homes and businesses through programs available on the EnergizeCT website. Through the same website there is also the EnergizeCT Rate Board, which also currently lists a few rates lower than the new standard service rate. These plans often have longer or shorter terms, so it’s important to review all contract details and regularly compare rates, which update every January and July,” said Consumer Counsel Coleman.

The consumer alert and more information can be found here.
