Strengthening Nursing Home Resident Councils Guide

Pilot Project

Thank you for participating in a national initiative to develop and strengthen Resident Councils in nursing homes. The Connecticut Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, in collaboration with the Moving Forward Coalition, is excited to support you in this important project.

Resident Councils are meant to be designed and directed by and for those who live in nursing homes. These councils offer residents a platform to share ideas, voice concerns, and make recommendations to the nursing home team.

To aid in this effort, we have developed a Strengthening Nursing Home Resident Councils Guide with input from nursing home residents and national advisors. This guide is primarily intended for use by residents, but nursing home staff members can also use it to support residents in leading their councils effectively.

Residents may choose one or more staff members to assist in planning meetings, managing requests, or acting on the council’s recommendations. These staff members will play a crucial role in ensuring that the Resident Council is resident led and focused on the needs and desires of those living in the facility.

Our team, including a representative from the Connecticut Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, will work directly with both residents and nursing home staff members to provide ongoing support for the Resident Council. The Ombudsman’s office is dedicated to advocating for individuals living in Connecticut’s nursing homes.

For more information or if you have any questions about the guide or the program, please feel free to reach out. We look forward to working together to enhance the voices of nursing home residents across Connecticut.
