According to Governor Lamont, heating costs are expected to rise. The high prices that CT residents pay for energy may be caused by various different supply factors. For example, characteristics in the state’s geography may create constraints in certain resources like natural gas.
Historically, though, Connecticut has been very dependent on heating oil which is used by over 40% of homes.
However, cleaner and lower cost options like natural gas and solar power are also available as choices. Many homes and businesses in CT are now working to make this transition.

Heat Sources in Connecticut
The most common ways that CT residents heat their homes and businesses include electricity, heating oil and natural gas.
Electricity
In Connecticut, electricity is generated using natural gas, as opposed to coal. The electric energy that results can then be turned into heat energy.
For example, electricity may be used to power heat pumps that intake air. These systems are more energy efficient compared to a gas furnace. Heat is transferred from a cool space to a warmer space to enhance warmth during the winter. In the summer, these pumps can also be used to cool your home.
Heating Oil
Heating oil is derived from crude oil. It is used in homes that have an oil-fueled heating system (i.e. oil tank, filter, fuel pump, combustion chamber, thermostat)
The oil is ignited in the combustion chamber which safely contains the heat generated. This process can be used to heat either air or water.
Homeowners must purchase enough heating oil for the winter months, in advance. In Connecticut, contracts for purchasing residential heating oil must be signed by October 31.
Natural Gas
Natural gas is basically a fossil fuel. It is formed by decomposing animal and plant matter exposed to heat and pressure beneath the Earth’s surface for millions of years. Natural gas occurs as a hydrocarbon gas mixture which is flammable.
So how is it used to heat homes? Using natural gas requires having the right built in system. In most cases this takes the form of central heating which requires a natural gas burner to produce warm air. This heated air circulates through ducts propelled by a fan or a blower.
