Program Responsibilities

What we do at the Department of Public Health:

  • Review and approve building plans for public mausoleums and columbaria under Connecticut General Statutes (CGS) Section 19a-310. The main focus is to make sure the buildings have proper ventilation and drainage. A review fee of $1,250 is required by law. An application must be submitted.
  • Review and approve plans for crematories and alkaline hydrolysis facilities under CGS Section 19a-320. DPH also inspects the facility to make sure it was built according to the approved plans and that required records are correctly kept. A $1,250 review fee is required by law. An application must be submitted.

  • Review and approve applications for private burial grounds under CGS Section 19a-313. These are usually small family burial areas on large pieces of land. An application must be submitted.

Alkaline Hydrolysis Application Form

Public Act 24-68 defined alkaline hydrolysis as a form of flameless cremation. The act allows a crematory to perform alkaline hydrolysis only if it is located on the grounds of a funeral home. This practice is subject to the same laws and requirements as standard cremation practices. 

Crematory Application Form

Under CGS Section 19a-320, DPH reviews and approves plans for new crematories and/or new retort structures. Download and complete the required application using the link below.
