In Connecticut (CT), local public health services are provided by 59 local health agencies. These agencies can be either town/city health departments or regional health districts. Each agency works on its own under the direction of a Director of Health. A Director of Health is hired by local leaders or a Board of Health.
Local health agencies have to follow state and local public health laws. They must also offer a basic health program. These services, led by the Director of Health, can be provided by the agency itself or with help from other groups.

List of Health Districts
There are 20 health districts in CT. 130 of the 169 towns in the state are in health districts. See which towns are in each district.
Tribal Health Departments
There are two federally recognized tribal nations in CT, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe. Each tribal nation has its own department to address public health concerns on their tribal lands.
