The Latent Print Unit specializes in the analysis of friction ridge detail which is present on the fingers, palms and soles of the feet. This arrangement of friction ridge detail is unique to each individual. The Unit responsibilities include:

  • The examination of fragmentary impressions developed on a variety of physical evidence utilizing the latest physical and chemical techniques and photography.
  • Conducting comparisons between latent prints and known prints, which may result in identifications, inconclusives, or exclusions. Comparisons are conducted using the ACE-V (analysis, comparison, evaluation, and verification) methodology.
  • This Unit examines submitted photographs and lifts employing image enhancement software bringing out the best possible detail from latent evidence.
  • Conduct database searches through the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and the FBI’s Next Generation Identification (NGI) system. The Latent Print Unit utilizes the databases to search unknown fingerprint and palm prints left at crime scenes or developed from submitted evidence against a repository of known fingerprints and palm prints.
  • Provide testimony relating to the analysis performed when necessary.
