Case Management

The Case Management Unit was established to serve as the primary liaison between forensic examiners at the Division of Scientific Services (DSS) and the agencies that submit evidence for analysis. The unit’s core mission is to facilitate clear, consistent communication—whether that involves requesting additional information or samples needed to complete testing or providing updates on the status of casework.

The unit also works in close collaboration with State’s Attorney’s Offices, particularly on cases requiring expedited processing due to pending court dates, trial schedules, or legal dispositions. Additionally, the Case Management Unit is responsible for fulfilling Discovery and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, ensuring that all disclosures are accurate, timely, and compliant with applicable legal standards.

By managing these administrative and logistical responsibilities, the Case Management Unit enables forensic examiners to concentrate fully on scientific analysis. The unit also prioritizes casework based on factors such as arrests, court deadlines, and case urgency, ensuring that critical matters are addressed in a timely manner.

In every case, the Case Management Unit helps streamline the forensic process—delivering the right information to the right people, at the right time—so that justice can move forward efficiently and effectively
