Bat Acoustic Monitoring Program
The CT DEEP Wildlife Division, with assistance from DEEP State Land Foresters, deploys acoustic bat detectors to collect information on the status of our state's bat populations. The detectors are equipped with ultrasonic microphones that record bat vocalizations. Biologists then use software to analyze the recorded bat calls and determine which species of bats were detected and how often. Due to threats, including habitat loss and white-nose syndrome, all nine of Connecticut's bat species are on Connecticut's list of Species of Greatest Conservation Need. Eight bat species are on the Connecticut Endangered, Threatened, and Special Concern Species List. Understanding where these species occur helps inform conservation and guide Forest Management on State Lands.
If you have come across one of our bat detectors on the landscape, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Please report any vandalism or damaged equipment to DEEP.batprogram@ct.gov; include location and photo if possible.
- Please do not touch or tamper with the equipment as this can interfere with data collection.
- The bat detectors only record high frequency sounds and do not record human voices.
- Any questions may be directed to DEEP.batprogram@ct.gov.
