DEEP’s Next No Child Left Inside® Families in the Parks Program is Saturday August 12, 2023

Saltwater Fishing Day at Fort Trumbull State Park in New London

(HARTFORD) — The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) presents its next 2023 No Child Left Inside® (NCLI) Families in the Parks Program at Fort Trumbull State Park in New London on Saturday, August 12, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. alongside DEEP’s Fish with CARE team.

Join NCLI’s squirrel mascot, “Nuts,” as he and friends celebrate Saltwater Fishing Day along the pier on the Thames River. No prior fishing experience is necessary, so children and families are welcome to join the outdoor activities, rain or shine. Fish with CARE (Connecticut Aquatic Resources Education) staff and volunteers will provide fishing poles, bait, and fishing instruction if needed. Families are asked to bring sunscreen, bug spray, and pack a picnic lunch and plenty of water.

“Teaching children how to fish opens so many doors to exciting adventures,” said DEEP Commissioner Katie Dykes. “Connecticut has so many fishing opportunities all across the state which is a fun and easy way to get outside and spend time with friends and family, while also fostering an appreciation for the outdoors.”

"Saltwater Fishing Day has proven to be exciting and rewarding for participants, with many catching their first fish at this event,” said Pete Aarrestad, DEEP’s Fisheries Director. “We encourage anyone who would like to spend some quality time outdoors and try out a new activity to join us.”

NCLI’s new Families in the Parks expands on the Great Park Pursuit Family Adventure program by extending the season and expanding the locations of activities from previous years. A variety of free, fun, and educational outdoor recreational opportunities at State Park and Forest locations including boating, fishing, hiking, StoryWalks®, nature centers, and museum days are part of the program. The NCLI team will also be available at library programs and seasonal festivals. This outdoor program concludes with the holiday celebrations at various DEEP State Parks, Forests, and facilities including Osborne Homestead Museum in Derby and Gillette Castle in East Haddam. Activities are designed to introduce families to the outdoors, build the next generation of environmental stewards, and showcase Connecticut’s State Parks and Forests.

A schedule of available events is available at NCLI Families in the Parks Program 2023 (ct.gov). Visit often for updates and current happenings.
