Geology Hike at Osbornedale State Park
On Sunday, May 13 from 1 pm to 2:30 pm, join retired UConn geology professor Randy Steinen for a hike through Osbornedale State Park. Osbornedale State Park is a fantastic place for geology enthusiasts and nature lovers. The park has several exposed rock faces that tell the area’s geologic past, as well as old quarries, abandoned mines, and a natural spring. During the hike, Professor Steinen will highlight some of the park’s most impressive geological features.Randy Steinen has described geology as both his hobby and passion. He received his training at the University of California-Riverside and Brown University, where he earned his Ph.D. Randy worked as an exploration geologist at the Marathon Oil Company, and with the U.S. Geological Survey. He also taught at California State University-Fresno and at UConn, retiring in 2002. Currently, Randy is a volunteer geologist with the Connecticut Geological Survey. He has visited several state parks and is writing geological stories about each of them.
This program is free and open to the public. Please meet at the parking lot of the Kellogg Environmental Center at 500 Hawthorne Ave, Derby, CT 06418. The group will then walk across the street to Osbornedale State Park. All ages are encouraged to come and learn more about the state’s rich geological history.
