We are so proud of the theme of our September edition of the "Spotlight on What's Right" newsletter.

 
National Recovery Month, established to increase awareness and lift the stigma of those who are facing substance use disorders. In the first story, you will read about the timely interventions provided to a young mother.  Due to the collaborative efforts of the Department and a community provider. She is now well along the recovery journey for  herself and her little boy.     Their smiles tell it all !

 
This is also a story of kinship care.  Nationally, September is also known as Kinship Placement Month. Currently, over 40% of youth in care are placed with kin and the Department has set an aspirational goal of 70%. We have work to do.

Engagement includes seeing past an allegation and meeting a family where they are.  This could not be more true as demonstrated by the efforts of a Norwalk Investigator found in the newsletter.  Her efforts get to the 'root causes' of the suspicion of neglect offers a supportive hand to a family in need.  This story includes attention to the family's culture and primary language.  In a nod to Hispanic Heritage Month, our racial justice and fatherhood practice emphasis are reflected strongly.  Also highlighted is how families need equitable services and supports according to their unique circumstances.

Please spend a few moments reading the piece entitled, "The Bridge to Many Paths of Recovery", written by Mary Painter, our CT DCF Director of the Office of Intimate Partner Violence and Substance Use Treatment & Recovery. Mary provides us candid insight into her familial experience from a unique and personal perspective.

September is also Suicide Prevention Month. Included in this edition is the link to the State of Connecticut Suicide Prevention Plan along with key contact numbers for individuals in crisis. We ask that you review this site and share broadly.

Our families are strong. They are resilient. This newsletter once again demonstrates that when we sincerely engage and empower them the opportunities are endless.
