Who can foster a child in Connecticut?
Any adult who can provide a safe, loving home to a child can be a foster parent. You’re eligible if you:
- Are at least 21 years old
- Have enough monthly income to cover your own living expenses before receiving a foster care monthly stipend
- Are physically and mentally capable of providing care to a child – but you don’t need to be in perfect physical condition
- Own or rent a home with at least two bedrooms. Foster children can share a room with other children but must have their own bed. Children of the opposite sex can share a room until they are three years old.
These are important, too:
- There is no discrimination based on race, gender identity or expression, marital status, or actual or perceived inherent sexuality. You can be single or married. You can be a same-gender couple.
- You can already have one or more children in your home.
- You can work outside the home if your plan is approved by the child’s social worker. Their evaluation is guided by the age and needs of each child.
