Generator Safety

  • Generators should always be used outdoors, away from doors, windows, and vents.
  • Install battery-operated or plug-in (with battery backup) carbon monoxide alarms in your home, following manufacturer's instructions.
  • Test carbon monoxide (CO) alarms often and replace the batteries when needed.
  • Before refueling a generator, turn it off and let it cool. Fuel spilled on hot engine parts could ignite.
