Practice Safe Fourth of July Activities

The Connecticut Commission on Fire Prevention and Control and the Connecticut State Fire Marshal’s Office are urging Connecticut residents to be Fire Safe this July 4th.  “This time of year is always busy for fire departments”, stated Alan Zygmunt, Public education Coordinator for the Connecticut Fire Academy, “This is due to three popular summertime activities; Fireworks, Outdoor Grilling and Campfires.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 19,500 fires were caused by fireworks annually and 9100 people were injured each year due to fireworks.  By following a few simple safety tips, we can insure a safe and happy holiday.

Fireworks Safety

  • Fireworks are illegal in the State of Connecticut – Use only Sparklers and Fountains if you are 16 or older.  Better yet, leave the fireworks displays to the professionals!
  • Keep children several feet away from lit fireworks.
  • Sparklers and Fountains produce very hot sparks and can cause permanent eye or burn injuries
  • Never light fireworks indoors or near dry grass.

    Grilling Safety

  • Before using a grill, check the connection between the propane tank and the fuel line. Make sure the venturi tubes (where the air and gas mix) are not blocked.
  • Grill at least 10 feet from any building.
  • Don’t let children play close to the grill.
  • Be careful when using lighter fluid. Do not add fluid to an already lit fire.
  • Dispose of hot coals properly.
  • Never grill/barbecue in enclosed areas - carbon monoxide could be produced.

    Campfire Safety

  • Check with your local fire department prior to having a campfire for regulations in your community.
  • Build campfires where they will not spread, away from dry grass and leaves.
  • Never leave campfires unattended.
