Water Safety

As the weather starts to get warmer and we begin to plan for this summer we think about staying cool in the water.  Whether at the beach, in a pond or lake or even your own backyard pool we must be aware of the dangers of drowning.  Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 1-4.  The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection and the Commission on Fire Prevention and Control want to remind all state residents to keep water safety in mind.  “Most drownings are preventable”, stated Alan Zygmunt, Public Fire Education coordinator from the Connecticut Fire Academy, “and these safety tips will help keep you and your family safe.”

  • Adults need to stay near children whenever they are in or near the water.  Reading or using a cell phone often can cause distractions enough to lead to a water emergency.
  • Install fencing around the pool to prevent unwanted access.    All gates should have self-closers and automatic latches.  Also, pool alarms are easy to install and will alert you if someone is in the water.
  • When boating, use a Coast Guard approved Life jacket.
  • Teach children how to swim and stay away from pool drains.
  • Learn how to do CPR on children and Adults.

The Connecticut Fire Academy is the teaching arm of the Connecticut Commission on Fire Prevention and Control.  Part of their mission is educating the public in injury prevention.  Additional information is available by visiting the USFA web site at https://www.usfa.fema.gov/prevention/life-safety-hazards/pools-and-swimming/
