Edible cannabis products, including baked goods, gummies and beverages, will be allowed in Connecticut’s adult-use market. To prevent accidental ingestion and use by individuals under the age of 21, there are strict rules for foods and beverages containing cannabis.
Servings
- Products cannot appeal to individuals under the age of 21 and can only be in cuboid or spherical forms. Animal shapes or other shapes that may appeal to children are strictly prohibited. Shape and color restrictions apply to all cannabis products, including gummies and other confectionaries.
- Each item must have “THC” clearly stamped or marked.
- Serving sizes must be clearly marked and easily separated if part of a multi- serving product.
- No more than 5 milligrams of THC is allowed per serving. A product with multiple servings can have no more than a total of 100 milligrams of THC.
- Beverages containing cannabis must be packaged in single serving sizes.
- In the adult-use cannabis market, cannabis products cannot be in the form of capsules, pills, tablets, sublinguals, nor suppositories or other product form administered through a bodily orifice other than orally. These product types are still allowed in the medical marijuana program.
Packaging
- Packaging cannot appeal to individuals under the age of 21 and must be child-safe, tamper-resistant and light-resistant.
- Edibles must be packaged in all-white packaging.
- Packaging also cannot be similar to other products that do not contain cannabis or products that are marketed to people under the age of 21.
Labels
- Labels cannot appeal to individuals under the age of 21.
- Text on labels must be in plain black font on a contrasting solid color background. Only the establishment’s logo may be in color and can only be up to three colors.
- In addition to general information about the cannabis product, labels must include:
- The following warning statement outlined by a red box: “This product is not FDA approved, may be intoxicating, cause long-term physical and mental health problems, and have delayed side effects. It is illegal to operate a vehicle or machinery under the influence of cannabis. Keep away from children.”
- Warning statement on health and mental health effects of cannabis.
- Symbols that the product contains THC and is for adults aged 21 years and older.
- The time it typically takes for the cannabis to start affecting the individual and that certain products may take longer to take effect.
