What services does the Bureau of Aging offer?

Read time: 6 minutes

The Bureau of Aging (BOA) helps older adults get the services they need to feel safe, confident, and independent. It plans and manages programs that support older adults living in their communities across Connecticut.

BOA studies what services people need and checks to make sure those services are working well. It also helps older adults, their families, and caregivers find the right support and connects them to helpful programs.

Many of these services are part of a federal law called the Older Americans Act. These services include:

  • Help at home
  • Meal programs (both at home and in group settings)
  • Job programs for older adults
  • Health insurance counseling
  • Breaks and support for caregivers

BOA works with many partners to provide these services. These partners include local agencies, senior centers, and groups that support older adults across the state. BOA also provides oversight of and leadership for the Coalition for Elder Justice in Connecticut.

Connecticut State Plan on Aging

The federal Older Americans Act requires each state to have a State Plan on Aging. Connecticut’s current plan covers October 1, 2024, through September 30, 2027.

The plan is a blueprint for how Connecticut works to support older adults in the community. It includes goals and steps the state will take to meet the needs of older adults and their families.

The current plan focuses on:

  • Making it easier to find and use quality long-term services and supports
  • Helping people stay healthy and independent as they age
  • Protecting the rights of older adults and helping them make informed choices

You can read the current Connecticut State Plan on Aging below. You can also read an amendment to the plan. The amendment includes updates based on federal Older Americans Act rules issued in 2024.

Help Shape Connecticut’s Next State Plan on Aging

The Bureau of Aging is working on Connecticut’s next State Plan on Aging, and we want to hear from you.

From October through December 2026, we are holding community listening sessions across Connecticut. Older adults, caregivers, service providers, community partners, and others are invited to share their ideas and experiences.

What we hear during these sessions will help us better understand what older adults need and what is most important to them.
