Electric and gas utilities have begun notifying residential customers with unpaid and/or past-due balances that if they do not take action and contact their utility to enroll in a payment plan, they are at risk of having their gas services terminated on Thursday, May 2, 2024. If your household has received a notification from your utility company, please contact them directly to set up a payment plan to keep your services on. These plans charge no interest, and all customers qualify at least once for one or more of these plans. PURA Commissioners to Vote on Amended UI Settlement; Development of Interim Small Business Tariff Option

Additional Rate Relief on the Way

(New Britain, CT – June 22, 2021) – Connecticut’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) on Wednesday will vote on two decisions that provide targeted economic relief for certain residential and small business customers.

AWednesday's regular meeting the PURA commissioners are scheduled to vote on several decisions, including:

  • Docket No. 17-12-03RE11 (Phase 1a): PURA Investigation Into Distribution System Planning of the Electric Distribution Companies – New Rate Designs and Rates Review

  • If adopted, the decision would direct The Connecticut Light and Power Company d/b/a Eversource Energy to develop an optional tariff rate that consists of a volumetric kilowatt-hour (kWh) distribution rate and a reduced distribution demand charge component. Existing small business customers may choose to remain under Eversource’s Rate 27 or Rate 30 tariff, or may elect to transition to the newly developed interim volumetric tariff rate rider.

  • The optional tariff would help small businesses control their energy expenditures and promote energy efficiency and renewable energy programs. It also addresses concerns raised by leadership of the legislature’s Energy & Technology Committee, who reported that small businesses were receiving high bills despite operating at reduced hours during the pandemic.

  • Docket No. 21-01-04 (Proposed Settlement Agreement): PURA Annual Review of the Rate Adjustment Mechanisms of The United Illuminating Company.

  • The amended settlement agreement adjusts United Illuminating’s distribution rates on July 1, 2021 to reflect a lower federal tax rate and to offset the previously postponed delivery rate increase from July 2020 with $44.7 million in over-collected tax liabilities, in addition to a $5 million voluntary contribution from UI stakeholders. The amended settlement terms would also ensure that PURA may immediately begin investigating performance-based metrics for UI’s operation, as authorized by the ‘Take Back Our Grid Act.’
