How can I tell I’ve been slammed and what can I do about it?

  • To find out if you have been slammed (your telephone has been switched to another service without your authorization), first review your telephone bill carefully. Look for unfamiliar company names or logos. Call your current local company for verification.
    • Customers can verify their communications carrier by calling one of the following numbers from the phone they are checking:

    Long Distance Verification: 1-700-555-4141

Local Toll Verification: 1-(Your Area Code)-700-4141

    • If you have been slammed, call your selected carrier and ask to be switched back immediately.
    • Contact the company that switched you without permission. Ask them to reimburse you for any excess charges over what you would have paid with your regular carrier, as well as any fees involved with switching back to your regular service.
    • File complaints with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) 888-225-5322 and with the Department of Public Utility Control 800-382-4586.
    • If you have any questions, call the Office of Consumer Counsel at 860-827-2900.
