Overview of Connecticut Governor’s Guards
In accordance with the General Statutes of Connecticut, the two companies of foot guard and two companies of horse guard militia units within the armed forces of the state. State law provides a statutory personnel authorization for the foot guard unites and horse guard units. The units are commanded by an officer in the rank of major. The adjutant general, appointed by the governor for a four-year term, is the commander of the armed forces of the state.
The Governor’s Guards are generally self-funded militia units. Funds raised by unit activities are deposited into a non-lapsing state account. In additional to unit activities to raised funds, state horse guard facilities provide rental income specifically utilized to offset the cost of maintaining state-owned horses. The State Military Department developed a public-private partnership with the two nonprofit organizations (Friends of the First Company Horse Guard, Inc., and Friends of the Second Company governor's Horse Guard, Inc.) to supplement costs associated with horse guard operations. The State Military Department also may accept donations for use for Governor's Guard activities.
