One of the highlights of the past 40 years for the 2nd Company Governor’s Horse Guards is the trip to Camp Harkness in Waterford, CT. Camp Harkness is a state park dedicated to the exclusive use for citizens with disabilities. The participants of the camp not only get to watch a demonstration of the horses’ abilities, but they get a chance to mingle and experience the sheer joy of riding the tall horses! The 2nd Company also assists the Quilts of Valor Organization with their mission to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.
Both the 1st and 2nd Company of the Governor’s Foot Guards answer the call year after year to provide colorful displays of patriotism and history with their color guard, rifle and band units. These units have participated in countless historic anniversaries throughout the state and country. Most recently the 70th year anniversary of D-Day on Liberty Island, grand opening of the American Revolution Museum in Philadelphia, as well as opening ceremonies for the Summer and Winter games of the Special Olympic Chapters of Connecticut.
The First Company Governor’s Horse Guard partners with the CT National Guard Family Program to provide a program called “Horses for Little Heroes”. It welcomes the youth of active soldiers to the horse guard facility to spend the day learning about horse care and riding the horses. In addition, the unit provides activities to the Avon School District “Screen Free Week” programs and has sponsored the “Say Nay to Drugs, D.A.R.E.” program.
