SECOND COMPANY GOVERNOR'S FOOT GUARD
1775

What We Do

The Second Company is an all volunteer unit.  It’s members donate their time and talents to serve the citizens of Connecticut.  The Second Company is primarily a drill and ceremony unit.  The unit participates in various parades and civic events through out the state.  The Second Company provides color and honor guards for many events.  The band and field music (fife & drum) perform in many venues and musters to the delight of audiences all across Connecticut.  In addition to it's ceremonial role, the Second Company participates in emergency related services, such as the deploying of the Department of Public Health Mobile Field Hospital.  At all times, the Second Company stands ready to be called into service whenever the Governor or the state Adjutant General  deems it necessary.

A Brief History

The first meeting of the Second Company was held at Beer's Tavern, later the site of the Hotel Taft in New Haven, on the evening of December 27, 1774 as the first entry in the Company Record Book shows. Among the 65 young men gathered on this occasion can be found many names familiar to the students of colonial history:

Aaron Burr, Ethan Allen, Hezekiah Sabin, Jr., James Hillhouse, Nathan Beers, Jr., and Benedict Arnold, our first commander, who later became a Major General in the Continental Army, fought and was wounded at Quebec and turned the tide of the war for independence after his victory at Saratoga.

The Second Company has been in continuous service to the state of Connecticut ever since.
