LEAN Program

Overview

A concept that has become popular in light of the recent budget issues experienced at every level of civil service is the pursuit of Lean Government. This simply means implementing methods to improve processes based upon “what the customer values,” seeking to optimize value delivered to the public. It examines the existing way of doing business and works to eliminate what may be considered waste — redundancy of effort, excessive movement, waiting times between functions, etc. A priority focus of the Lean model is the customer. All steps in a process should contribute to an outcome valued by the customer (e.g., timely determinations and communications). In short, the Lean model is a way of doing business that is very much in alignment with the goals of DSS.
