SCHOOL SAFETY

Goal – The USD#1 Safety Assessment Committee will strive to ensure a safe and secure learning environment for all district and custody staff, students, volunteers and visitors.
The district recommendations for site administrators to establish and maintain a safe and secure school environment are:
Yearly:
- Collaborate with custody staff to provide in-house Behavior Management refresher training to all school staff.
- Collaborate with custody staff to conduct a safety walk through tour of all school areas, and work to improve and areas that may be of safety concerns.
- Collaborate with key and tool control officer to surplus and/or remove any broken/unused equipment.
- Collaborate with custody staff for refresher training on Code of Penal Discipline/Disciplinary process.
- Collaborate with MHU to provide in-house updated training for inmate population information.
- Collaborate with Security Division to offer current/updated training on Security Risk Groups.
- Collaborate with K-9 Unit to offer refresher training.
- Collaborate with EAP to offer in house training on updated information/services available to staff.
- All USD#1 staff sign off on the USD#1 Technology Usage Policy and handbook.
Monthly:
School admin will report safety measures, training, issues and accomplishments in the monthly report.
Weekly:
- Administrators - during weekly walk through in classrooms and shops, conduct safety checks on equipment. Staff – conduct equipment checks.
- Report any faulty equipment to administrator and/or custody.
On-going:
- Assign new staff to an in-house USD#1 mentor during the first year of teaching for support.
- Utilize the USD#1 Teacher Evaluation and Professional Development Plan for new staff and mentor for training and information. Monitor and assess as needed.
- School administrator or designee is a member of the facility Safety Committee.
- Collaborate with facility maintenance dept. to conduct repairs as needed.
- Utilize agency services in event of crisis/critical incident.(EAP, CIRST, H.R. P3B union, contracts)
- Utilize and post the agency Power Card for staff use.
- USD#1 teachers and vocational instructors will utilize district and extension curriculum and facility resources to establish and maintain a safe school environment.
- Conduct tests of all school phones.
- Make sure all staff know the emergency phone number to contact control in the event of an emergency.
- Maintain a set of directives at each site.
