  Good morning, and thank you for allowing me the opportunity to discuss this landmark settlement we have reached with Northeast Utilities and NSTAR. I am here to urge you to approve this settlement agreement, which assures that the merger will occur in a manner that best serves the public interest in Connecticut.

• Attorney General, Consumer Counsel Petition Regulators for Investigation of Connecticut Electric Supplier

  Attorney General George Jepsen and Consumer Counsel Elin Swanson Katz today jointly petitioned the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (“PURA”) for an investigation into a Connecticut-licensed energy supplier that may have engaged in deceptive marketing tactics in soliciting customers.

• Attorney General, Consumer Protection Commissioner: Voluntary Agreements Reached with Five “Gifting Table” Scheme Participants

  Attorney General George Jepsen and Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner William M. Rubenstein today announced that five former participants in an alleged illegal pyramid scheme will forfeit a total of $202,500 through voluntary compliance agreements reached with the state.

• Attorney General, Consumer Counsel Seek To Enforce Terms of Merger Settlement Agreement With NU

  Attorney General George Jepsen and Consumer Counsel Elin Swanson Katz today asked state utility regulators to compel Northeast Utilities to respond to questions about layoffs and staffing levels at NU following its merger with NSTAR, as required by the Settlement Agreement.

• Attorney General, Consumer Counsel Credit State Regulators for Quick Response on NU-NSTAR Motion

  Acting in response to a motion filed Tuesday by the Attorney General and the Consumer Counsel, the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) has ruled that Northeast Utilities and NStar “must demonstrate that the proposed merger is in the public interest in order to gain PURA approval.”

• Assistant Attorney General Matthew Budzik Recognized by U.S. Department of Justice

  Attorney General George Jepsen announced today that a member of his staff was recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice for his work in helping to negotiate the $25 billion settlement with the nation’s five largest mortgage servicers, announced earlier this year.

• Agreement Reached With Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. Over Release of Some Customers’ Personally Identifiable Information

  Attorney General George Jepsen and Consumer Protection Commissioner William Rubenstein have reached an agreement with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. to provide additional protections to the current and former customers whose personal information was made public.

  Attorney General George Jepsen said today that he supports a federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission order to its staff to develop an environmental impact statement (EIS) and a revised waste confidence rule on the temporary storage of spent nuclear fuel.
