Gov Malloy And Lt Gov Wyman Statements On Final Approval Of Legislation Providing Wage Increases For Workers Who Care For People With Disabilities

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman released the following statements in response to the 29-4 vote in the Senate this afternoon to adopt legislation that will avert a costly and disruptive strike and provide wage increases for thousands of workers in Connecticut who care for people with intellectual disabilities at group homes and day programs.

“For far too long, the people who provide care to our most vulnerable neighbors have been underpaid for their critical work,” Governor Malloy said. “The action taken by the Senate today will ensure they are compensated fairly while helping to avert a strike that would disrupt the lives of the individuals with intellectual disabilities and cost Connecticut taxpayers an estimated $1 million per day. We are grateful to these hardworking women and men for their work and their patience with the legislative process, and to the legislators who had the courage to support them today.”

“This legislation gives a long-overdue wage increase to employees working with the state's most vulnerable residents. After more than a decade of stagnant wages, these human services employees deserve our support so they can support their own families,” Lt. Governor Wyman said. “I applaud the legislature for sending this legislation to the Governor for signature.”

The legislation is House Bill 5460, An Act Concerning Minimum Employee Wages for Providers of State-Contracted Human Services. Earlier this week, it was approved by the House by a bipartisan vote of 88-62.
