Gov. Malloy And Lt. Gov. Wyman Applaud House Passage Of Legislation Banning Bump Stocks

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman are applauding the Connecticut House of Representatives for voting tonight to approve legislation that will ban enhancements that increase the rate of fire for semiautomatic weapons, including items such as bump stocks, trigger cranks, binary trigger systems, and other modifications. The legislation was adopted by a vote of 114-35.

The Governor proposed the ban earlier this year and submitted written testimony to the General Assembly in support of the proposal.

“The vote in the House today represents an important step in our ongoing efforts to keep our communities safe,” Governor Malloy said. “I cannot see one legitimate reason why anyone needs to own a bump stock other than for the mass shooting of people. The language that was approved today represents a strong, smart approach to this issue. I applaud the House for their vote and urge the Senate to swiftly adopt it in concurrence so I can sign it into law and have Connecticut join the growing number of states who are banning these dangerous devices.”

“This legislation demonstrates our commitment to the safety of our residents and continues Connecticut’s leadership on gun violence prevention,” Lt. Governor Wyman said. “I commend the House action in support of public safety and urge the Senate to pass this bill quickly. We must stand together to protect the public safety.”

The legislation is House Bill 5542, An Act Concerning Bump Stocks and Other Means of Enhancing the Rate of Fire of a Firearm. It closely mirrors similar legislation introduced this session by Governor Malloy (Senate Bill 18).

The bill next moves to the State Senate for consideration.
