Gov. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Wyman Statements On Inclusion Of Healthcare Mandate Repeal In Senate Republican Tax Plan
(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman today released the following statements regarding the plan by Senate Republicans to include in their tax package a repeal of the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) requirement that most people have health insurance:
Governor Malloy said, “Senate Republicans are taking a bad bill and making it worse. Their proposals fall very short of the promise of real, substantive tax reform that benefits average Americans. Instead, what we have seen thus far is a thinly veiled attempt to provide tax relief to the top one percent and a continued effort to sabotage the health insurance marketplace. The repeal of the individual mandate will increase the number of uninsured Americans by 15 million. That means, in effect, the Senate Republican tax bill will increase the national deficit, destabilize the insurance marketplace, increase health insurance premiums by 20 percent, and raise taxes on Connecticut’s middle class families. I strongly urge Congress to rethink their approach, go back to the drawing board, and propose real solutions where the majority of American families stand to gain.”
Lt. Governor Wyman said, “This is bad policy that will make healthcare more expensive for everyone. The individual mandate is a key tenet of the ACA, it creates a diverse insurance pool that helps keep costs in check. Without the mandate, the uninsured rate rises and costs go up for everyone – exactly the opposite of where we need to go. The gains under the ACA are undeniable. Congress should be working to improve the ACA, not rollback healthcare for all Americans.”
