Gov. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Wyman Statements on the Failure of the Senate Republican Version of Trumpcare

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman today released the following statements in response to the failure of the Senate Republican version of the Trumpcare bill:

Governor Malloy said, “The failure of the Senate Republican version of Trumpcare is a win for the American people, but we cannot become complacent. Since the day he was inaugurated, President Trump has sabotaged the Affordable Care Act in a cynical attempt to cut taxes for the top one percent by forcing Americans to accept higher-cost and lower-quality healthcare. Let me be clear – a repeal with a promise to ‘replace’ later is an equally disastrous proposal and a diversion from the truth. Over the next ten years, millions would lose coverage, premiums would double, and the individual market would completely collapse.

“Since the adoption of the Affordable Care Act, hundreds of thousands of Connecticut residents have benefited by gaining access to health coverage and in return, greater access to the care they need to live healthy, productive lives. We cannot go down a road – simply for political purposes – that will result in millions losing coverage. While nearly all of us agree that we must focus on reducing costs for consumers and increasing access to care, we cannot dismantle our current system and roll back the progress we have made. Attempts to eviscerate Medicaid – which provides healthcare for our most vulnerable residents – must be wholly rejected as we move forward. I urge Republicans in the Senate to work with Democrats to stabilize the market and make improvements to the current system that will benefit all Americans, rather than risking the lives of millions who depend on it.”

Lt. Governor Wyman said, “I hope that now our federal partners will work with us to improve the ACA and bring down the costs of healthcare for all Americans. The Congressional Republicans have spent considerable time and taxpayer money chasing bad public policy, destabilizing an otherwise well-functioning healthcare marketplace, and threatening to raise costs significantly for older Americans, women, and anyone with a pre-existing condition. With among the lowest uninsured rates in the nation, Connecticut is one of many states that shows that the ACA is working. We are focused on strengthening the system and implementing healthcare reforms that will continue this progress.”
